All About Layering

So much of what we do as card creators is compose images that are pleasing to the eye. One way to accomplish this goal is to create layers using color. Altenew makes this ever so easy with their layered stamp sets. It comes as no surprise that the first class I took for the Altenew Educator Certification Program covers this basic card making technique. Today I’m showcasing two cards I created using an Altenew layered stamp set, Lush Garden, and two different layering techniques: masking and layered dimension.

The first card I created, I masked the yellow flower and stamped the two peach flowers around it. What is masking? The technique is actually really easy, and makes for a beautiful bouquet effect. To mask, I fussy cut around the outline of the yellow flower on some masking paper. The masking paper has a very low tack and is placed on top of the yellow flower. Then I stamped the peach flowers on top of the masked yellow flower. When the mask is removed it looks as if the peach flowers are actually behind the yellow flower.

I’ll be honest, I was quite intimidated by this technique. I remembered, though, I learned everything I needed in kindergarten… and fussy cutting is one of those skills! And if I can do it, anyone can do it! Pro Tip: Save the mask you fussy cut in the stamp package, that way you can use it in the future.

After I finished stamping the peach flowers and the leaves, I removed the mask. As you can see, it looks as if the peach flowers are actually behind the yellow flower. If you look closely you can see the outlines of the flowers are slightly “off”. But, that’s ok! As a dear friend of mine, Bridget of Bridget Casey Designs, reminds me….it’s only paper! And, it still looks pretty.

To finish the card, I heat embossed the sentiment in a rose gold. I cut the card down slightly so I could add a peach background behind the card front.

The second card I created using the same stamp set, Lush Garden. But this time I added some dimension to the card by popping up one of the flowers and a leaf on some foam tape. I left off the outline stamp on each of the flowers, making for a bit more wispy look. I die cut the two flowers on the top of the card, and stamped the bottom flower directly onto the card front. I stamped the sentiment directly only the card front. Then I cut down the card so I could add the peach border. As you can see, I got a different look for this card just by leaving off one layer of the stamping process and adding a bit of dimension.
