Christmas Poinsettias

We all carry within ourselves images that speak of celebration and tradition. Christmas is brimming with these beautiful images. For some it may be the angel atop a Christmas tree, handed down from generation to generation. For others it’s a kitchen full of beautifully decorated sugar cookies. Bright red poinsettias remind me the Christmas celebration is approaching. Each year, my church fills the space in front of the iconostasis with these vibrant flowers. When the poinsettias are brought into the church I begin to look forward to our Christmas Eve service, singing my favorite carols and wishing those I love a merry holiday.

Taylored Expressions released a poinsettia stamp and stencil set this holiday season I thought would make a wonderful way to share my own internal image of Christmas with others.

To create this card front, first, I used the red rubber background stamp from the Taylored Expressions Merry Blooms stamp and stencil set to lay down the green leaves and stems. Second, I laid down the poinsettias using the Taylored Expression’s stencil and Gina K Red Velvet Glitter Paste. Pro Tip: Tape down all the edges of the stencil and hold down the stencil right around each poinsettia with your fingers to make application of the paste more even. The paste tends to squish under the stencil, causing the poinsettia leaves to look gloopy. I chose to use use a red glitter paste because it added texture, dimension, and sparkle to the card. However, if one used red ink through the poinsettia stencil it would allow more detail from the third layer of the Taylored Expression’s stamp set. I chose to use the third step, Taylored Expression’s clear stamps, to add just a bit of extra red color to the berries and leaves.

To construct the card I layered the card front onto Tonic Ruby Ritz Glitter Cardstock. I die cut an an oval with a scalloped edge from Gina Designs and centered it, adhering it with foam tape to create additional dimension. I stamped and die cut the sentiment using the Joyful Seasons stamp and die sets from Taylored Expressions, centering it on the oval. Finally, I adhered gold sequins around the Merry Christmas sentiment and onto the centers of the poinsettias.
